For food that is high on taste but reasonable on price, Chequers is one of the best gastro pubs in the Thames Valley bar none.
You're greeted by an intimate wooden beamed bar area with comfortable seating with diners dotting around the main older part of the building, the Conservatory, or a private dining room, all ensuring that you don't feel like you're elbow to elbow with other diners.
The tempting menu follows the seasons, with daily blackboard specials showcasing the fresh ingredients picked up by the kitchen on any given day.
Our pick of the mains are the half lobster with Bearnaise sauce and frites, the sauté gnocchi with wild mushroom, asparagus and brie cream sauce which will thrill any vegetarian bored of the usual eating out fayre, and the seared peppered tuna loin, served with nicoise salad and topped with a poached egg. Whatever you plump for, make sure you save room for dessert. As well as a sticky toffee pudding to make you moan with pleasure, the selection of unusual icecream flavours are definitely worth a try - our recommendations are brown bread, Turkish Delight, caramel and fudge pieces and lemon curd.
